Summer Term in Year 3

This term, Year 3 will be creating poems and raps with a view to performing and evaluating them. In Geography, we are starting a new topic on rivers and this will include learning about the water cycle as well as researching and comparing different rivers. This will link to our next English sequence where we will be writing adventure stories.

In Science, we begin a topic on plants and seeds. In May we will go on a trip to Rosemoor Gardens to take part in a workshop titled, ‘The Magic of Seeds,’ where the children will be involved in activities such as dissecting a broad bean seed, sorting seeds into categories, eating some seeds and sowing a pot of flower seeds.

As the sun is making more of an appearance, we hope to be taking the children outside more for P.E where they will be learning skills for cricket, rounders and athletics. For art, they will cover impressionism, printing and clay and in Spanish, the children will learn about weather, clothes and sport.

We would like to request your continued support with your child’s reading by listening to them read aloud and discussing their book with them. To help your child remember their spellings which we are learning at school, a practice sheet will be sent home fortnightly.

If any parents or grandparents would like to help read with children in class, please see the class teacher.

Spring Term in Year 3

This term in English we will continue using the Talk for Writing method to learn about Cornish myths and other fables and the children will create some of their own. In Science we will be investigating Light and Shadows in the first half followed by Rocks & Soils in the second. This will link with our Geography topic on Volcanoes & Earthquakes.

Both classes will enjoy a block of 8 lessons at The Splash during the Spring term. There will be a letter with more details to follow. We will ask for helpers to walk with us nearer the time. The other P.E. lessons will focus on netball and rugby.

In Art we will develop water-colour skills and make clay faces. We also hope to arrange a visit to a local art gallery and/or visits from local artists. We will continue to further the children’s Spanish knowledge covering body parts, months of the year, pets & animals.

The children have really embraced the Explorer Reading programme and have been very motivated to read regularly at home. Thank you for your support with this and please continue encouraging your child to read as much and as widely as possible.

If any parents or grandparents would like to help read with children in class, please see the class teacher.
